Environmental Planner
Job Description:
Imagine a piloted air taxi that takes off vertically, then quietly carries you and your fellow passengers over the congested city streets below, enabling you to spend more time with the people and places that matter most. Since 2009, our team has worked steadily to make this dream a reality. We’ve designed and tested many generations of prototype aircraft capable of serving in a network of electric air taxis. We’re looking for talented, committed individuals to join our team as we push onward toward certifying the Joby aircraft, scaling our manufacturing, and launching our initial commercial service.

Joby Aviation is seeking a highly organized, passionate individual to work on the Environmental Planning and Sustainability Team in all aspects of work related to compliance and land use planning. Reporting directly to the Sustainability Lead, this position requires technical expertise in California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA), National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), and other environmental regulations.

Our Environmental Planning and Sustainability Team is building a world-class program to address climate change impacts, resource conservation, waste reduction, and environmental compliance within Joby Aviation. The team drives initiatives to ensure both environmental compliance and environmental sustainability throughout the company.

Your responsibilities will include streamlining ESG metrics management and data reporting to ensure Joby is meeting external stakeholder expectations. Managing environmental land use studies across Joby’s aircraft manufacturing and maintenance facilities, office buildings, and vertiport infrastructure to support our all-electric air taxi service, including both California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) and National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) for greenfield, urban, and FAA-managed land.

Responsibilities
  • Identify appropriate due diligence studies to inform feasibility of infrastructure builds
  • Manage multiple land use studies and associated consultants simultaneously across different types of operational sites including manufacturing and vertiport operation and gain sign-off from required authorizing agencies
  • Lead cross-functional internal coordination across key functions including Policy, Commercial Operations, Infrastructure, and Business Development
  • Establish land-use study and environmental impact assessment playbook to streamline future process development
  • Analyze potential sites to flag potential environmental risks, supporting long term development efforts as part of our interdisciplinary approach towards site evaluation and selection
  • Respond, on behalf of lead agency clients, to comments and questions raised during the environmental review process
  • Provide technical support and advice to stakeholders on environmental issues
  • Participate in public and community engagement
  • Collaborate with key stakeholders for international development projects, researching local environmental planning regulations as needed to help peer review and advise on critical project decisions
Required
  • 4+ years relevant experience with a proven track record in environmental planning and compliance
  • Bachelors or Masters degree in Environmental Planning, Environmental Science, or related field
  • Knowledge of California and federal laws and regulations
  • Familiarity with the environmental procedures for agencies like Caltrans, FHWA, FTA, and FAA
  • Experience with establishing, maintaining, and fostering cross-functional relationships
  • Ability to flourish with minimal guidance, be proactive, and handle uncertainty and ambiguity
  • Successfully contributed to land use studies such as NEPA or CEQA within the United States
  • Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills
  • Proven track record of program management - managing, organizing, and driving deliverables of complex projects
  • Strong analytical skills and written communication skills
Desired
  • Experience working in or closely with a local government agency
  • Experience in the aviation industry or commercial development
  • Certification as a Professional Environmental Planner
  • Knowledge of Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
