Job Description:

SummaryThe Director of Safety leads the day-to-day coordination and continuous improvement of Cape Air’s safety programs, including reporting, training, investigations, corrective action follow-up, and emergency preparedness. This role works across the company to monitor safety performance, identify concerns, support implementation of safety initiatives, and promote a positive reporting culture. The Director brings significant issues to the Vice President of Safety and helps support the overall work of the Safety Department.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the day-to-day management, execution, and continuous improvement of company safety programs, including but not limited to the Aviation Safety Action Program (ASAP), Internal Evaluation Program (IEP), Fatigue Risk Management Plan (FRMP), Flight Operations Quality Assurance (FOQA), safety training, and safety promotion.
  • Supervises Safety Department personnel and manages day-to-day workload, priorities, and performance expectations, with support and direction from the Vice President of Safety.
  • Maintains safety reporting systems, dashboards, and routine safety performance reporting for leadership review.
  • Escalates significant safety risks, systemic issues, and resource constraints to the Vice President of Safety.
  • Tracks corrective action implementation and assists with evaluating whether mitigations are effective.
  • Supports or coordinates internal safety investigations of selected events, incidents, and accidents and ensures findings, contributing factors, and corrective actions are documented and tracked.
  • Ensures safety-related training materials are developed, maintained, and periodically evaluated for effectiveness.
  • Chairs the company’s monthly Safety Committee meeting with department leaders to review safety performance, discuss trends and risks, assign follow-up and track completion of action items.
  • Provides timely, practical safety recommendations to company leaders, the Safety Committee, and the Vice President of Safety based on reported events, trend analysis, audits, and risk assessments.
  • Works with department leaders to assign, monitor, and drive timely completion of corrective actions, risk mitigations, and other safety-related actions resulting from safety programs.
  • Partners with department leaders to integrate safety programs, reporting expectations, and risk controls into day-to-day operations within their areas of responsibility.
  • Supports company response activities related to aircraft accidents, serious incidents, and other safety events, including investigation and follow-up responsibilities as assigned
  • Monitors safety-related compliance trends, identifies potential gaps or concerns, and elevates significant issues to operational leadership and the Vice President of Safety for review and action.
  • Reviews and evaluates the adequacy of the Emergency Response Plan and oversees the planning, conduct, and evaluation of drills, exercises, and related follow-up improvements.
  • Monitors internal and industry safety trends, emerging risks, and relevant lessons learned that may affect company operations, and communicates significant concerns to leadership.
  • Travels as needed to Cape Air cities to support safety, leadership, and operational objectives as well as to industry conferences, meetings, and forums, and for designated go-team, crisis response, or other company response activities when assigned.
  • Performs other duties as assigned in support of the Safety Department and company safety objectives.

Qualifications:

Required 

  • Strong written, verbal, organizational, and interpersonal skills
  • Three to five years of airline, aviation safety, or operational experience
  • Experience supporting or leading safety programs, investigations, audits, corrective actions, or risk management activities
  • Ability to work effectively with employees and leaders at all levels of the organization
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, drive follow-through, and support day-to-day department execution
  • Experience supervising staff or leading cross-functional teams, projects, or programs
  • Demonstrated aviation operational experience or aviation safety experience
  • Sound judgment, professionalism, and the ability to communicate clearly on sensitive safety matters
  • Ability and willingness to travel and respond as needed in support of company operations and response activities

Preferred

  • Previous airline management or supervisory experience
  • Experience in a Part 135 operating environment
  • Bachelor’s degree in aviation, safety, or a related field
  • Possession of an Airline Transport Pilot (ATP), Airframe and Powerplant (A&P), or Aircraft Dispatcher certificate
  • Experience using safety reporting systems, dashboards, or data analysis tools
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office products
